Chapter 15

Aria

I didn’t sleep at all that night, which was nothing new but for some reason this time it disturbed me more than it had in the past few months. I finally got out of bed at four-thirty and got dressed in my comfiest yoga pants and pulled a long-sleeved one shoulder tunic type t-shirt on over my workout top, perfect for travelling since none of it contained metal. I don’t know how many times my underwire bras have set off the metal detectors and then had to deal with security using a wand. Not the thing you want to contend with and since most of my bras contain underwires to help boost my bust line this is the best option for travel.

Now I don’t typically wear my pushup bras on assignments, I stick with the moisture-controlled workout tops like I’m wearing right now because they provide more security for me and are cooler than a heavily padded bra when it’s a hundred and ten degrees outside.

It doesn’t take me anytime as my bag’s already packed and I’m slinking down the steps at exactly five o’clock being careful to not wake anyone. In the kitchen I scrawl out a hasty note to my parents, so they don’t worry, and I don’t have to deal with an actual goodbye and head outside to meet the hired car.

That’s where I was when Cooper found me, sitting on the porch swing waiting on the car that should be here by five-thirty. He opened the front door and silently walked over to join me on the swing and for the next five minutes he just sat there, the same way he’d sat in the car last night after he’d chewed me out for being selfish.

“Aria, I’m sorry,” he says to me after the tension builds to the point of me wanting to scream. “I had no right to say that you haven’t grown up because you have.”

“It doesn’t matter Coop,” I tell him although it’s not true. It does matter to me, but I can’t let him know that. “I know you think I should come clean with everyone, but it’d just do more harm than good.”

“Right now, I don’t care about them I want to know what’s going on right here, between us,” he states turning to look at me. “Do you honestly think we can go back to being friends?”

“No, I know we can’t because we never really were. You’re my brother’s best friend and the guy I made a mistake with. It was a mistake Coop you’ve got to see that,” I add when his jaw tightens at the word.

“I just see a woman who’s running out on her family and a second chance to go do what? Hunt down some story? Come on Aria, what are you really playing at? I haven’t seen your name in a magazine or newspaper so what are you writing?” he asks his face shutting down on readable expressions, but his voice is full of disappointment and derision.
